Chakalaka Relish Recipe

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 large onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 red pepper, diced
1 green pepper, diced
2 large carrots, grated
1 tablespoon curry powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon) chillli flakes (adjust to taste)
1 can (400g) chopped tomatoes
1 can (400g) baked beans in tomato sauce
60 ml tomato puree
Salt and black pepper to taste

In a large pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and garlic, sauté until softened and fragrant.

Stir in the diced red and green peppers, and grated carrots. Cook for about 5 minutes until the vegetables are tender.

Add the curry powder, ground cumin, paprika, and chilli flakes to the pan. Mix well to coat the vegetables with the aromatic spices.

Pour in the chopped tomatoes, baked beans in tomato sauce, and tomato puree. Stir everything together and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes on low heat, allowing the flavours to meld together and the sauce to thicken.

Season the Chakalaka Relish with salt and black pepper to taste. For an extra kick, feel free to add more chilli flakes if you prefer it spicier.

Remove the pan from the heat and let the Chakalaka Relish cool slightly before serving.

Enjoy your Chakalaka Relish alongside our delicious Boerewors sausages for an explosion of flavours that will transport you to the heart of South Africa’s rich culinary heritage!
